Convention note

Published amateur references disagree here. This site follows the ARRL/RSGB convention (KN sent as one joined symbol), which a 2014 IARU Region 1 paper describes as followed by “all printed literature by various IARU member societies known to us.” A separate IARU-endorsed operating guide (EOPRA) states KN should instead be sent as two separately-spaced letters. Neither is universally mandatory — check your local society's guidance if it matters for your operating.

Practical usage

Sent as a single continuous character (dah-dit-dah-dit-dah), not as separately spaced "K" and "N." Used mid-QSO to keep a two-station conversation exclusive and avoid inviting a pile-up of other callers.
