Practical usage

The universal opening call to start a contact with anyone listening — "CQ CQ CQ, this is HS8AC calling and standing by" — used across CW, voice, and digital modes alike. "CQ DX" is the same call narrowed to distant/foreign stations only — e.g. "CQ DX CQ DX DE HS8AC" signals that the caller is specifically listening for DX, not local contacts.
