Meaning
"Closing (down)" — the last signal sent before a station shuts down completely for the session.
Convention note
Published amateur references disagree on CL's transmission style, the same way they disagree on KN — but in the opposite direction. EOPRA (IARU-endorsed) states CL should be sent as one joined symbol. Long-standing ARRL/RSGB tradition sends it as two separate, normally-spaced letters, per the same 2014 IARU Region 1 conference paper (IRA) that documents the KN dispute. This site's default for CL is the separate-letters form.
Practical usage
Often sent right after SK: "SK CL" means the contact is over and the operator is also shutting the station down (as opposed to SK alone, which just ends this one contact while remaining on frequency for others). Like KN, CL's exact transmission convention is a genuine, documented point of disagreement between sources: EOPRA states CL should be sent as one joined symbol, while long-standing ARRL/RSGB tradition (per the same 2014 IARU Region 1 paper discussed on the KN page) sends it as two separate, normally-spaced letters. This site follows the traditional separate-letters convention for CL, the opposite default from its KN choice — deliberately, since the two disputes are independent and the traditional convention differs by sign.
