Practical usage
On CW, "9" (dah-dah-dah-dah-dit) takes noticeably longer to send than "N" (dah-dit), so contest and CW operators substitute "N" for "9" purely for sending speed: "5NN" is sent and understood exactly as "599." This convention is specific to CW — it is not used on voice.
